The Commemorative Air Force B-29, “FIFI”

The Boeing B-29 Superfortress, first flown in 1942, began active service in 1944. It was designed as a replacement for the older B-17s and B-24s, having the longer range and greater bomb loads necessary for operations in the World War II Pacific theater. The B-29 was also used in the Korean War in the early 1950s and was a staple of the U.S. Air Force until the late 1950s. ​

The B-29, FIFI, was acquired by the Commemorative Air Force (CAF) in 1971 when a group of CAF members found her at the U.S. Navy Proving Ground at China Lake, California where she was being used as a missile target. The airplane was rescued and restored and has been flying for forty years. Learn more about FIFI at http://www.cafB29B24.org.

FIFI will be at Mather Field in Sacramento and available to the public Thursday, June 5, through Sunday June 8. She will also be at the Napa Airport, Tuesday and Wednesday, June 10 and 11. We believe that getting up close and personal with these aircraft is the best way to learn history. We invite everyone to come and climb the entrance ladder, navigate your way into the cockpit and experience the history first hand.

All flight times above 10 seconds count when called. Maximum time limited to 60 seconds per flight.

Fly one, time one, and the honor system is the norm. $.50 per entry. Reentry allowed once only.

We passed out our membership roll with instructions on updating each member’s particular interests. This will be incorporated into a future membership roster.

Ron and Ed went to Schmidt Ranch. Ed got a beautiful medal for 2nd place in SAM 27 speed 400 timed run.

Brian Workman has been cataloging our video collection. There’s a lot of good stuff to check out. We’ve got paper catalogs and will upload to the web as well. Avail yourself of this great collection! (Note the catalog is now available as a separate page on the website)

Lowe’s ships their fan fold foam to your house for free if it’s not available at your local store.

Jim had a model and plans from 1949 for this sweet little glider.

There was a Muciano design P-51 with 0.49 Cox engine, from last raffle.

Dennis Romero had two foamies… a wing. And a rather large paper plane made from a sheet of dollar tree foam board.
