Looks like the National Parks are off limits for RC aircraft of all types.

“US National Park Service Director Jonathan Jarvis signed a policy memorandum in June prohibiting launching, operating or landing any unmanned aircraft on any park service property.

“‘We have serious concerns about the negative impact that flying unmanned aircraft is having in parks, so we are prohibiting their use until we can determine the most appropriate policy that will protect park resources and provide all visitors with a rich experience,’ he wrote in a statement at the time.”

Really unfortunate.

Dennis Romano found this website that depicts Bay Area airfields that were abandoned and in most cases have disappeared, including the original Concord Airport which was the Western terminus for mail flights and the Naval Weapons Station Field. Lots of pictures of “Golden Age” aircraft too.

Made me wonder, a lot more B-47s were built, but I don’t recall seeing or hearing of one still flying. Do know there is on display at Castle in Atwater.

The Commemorative Air Force B-29, “FIFI”

The Boeing B-29 Superfortress, first flown in 1942, began active service in 1944. It was designed as a replacement for the older B-17s and B-24s, having the longer range and greater bomb loads necessary for operations in the World War II Pacific theater. The B-29 was also used in the Korean War in the early 1950s and was a staple of the U.S. Air Force until the late 1950s. ​

The B-29, FIFI, was acquired by the Commemorative Air Force (CAF) in 1971 when a group of CAF members found her at the U.S. Navy Proving Ground at China Lake, California where she was being used as a missile target. The airplane was rescued and restored and has been flying for forty years. Learn more about FIFI at http://www.cafB29B24.org.

FIFI will be at Mather Field in Sacramento and available to the public Thursday, June 5, through Sunday June 8. She will also be at the Napa Airport, Tuesday and Wednesday, June 10 and 11. We believe that getting up close and personal with these aircraft is the best way to learn history.
